Missionaries: Gotta Catch 'em All!

How are missionaries like Pokemon? Better question: how are missionaries not like Pokemon? We're all here for the same purpose, and go through changes throughout our mission. As we grow and improve, we become something bigger and better, just like Pokemon do. We don't do it through fighting like they do, but we certainly do change. I came up with this little joke back in Bozeman, comparing missionaries to Pokemon, and decided to show it to all of you, cause I thought it was pretty funny. So, first we'll look at a pretty standard missioanry change:

First, we have Oddish here... He's all happy and excited, and ready to go crazy on his area! He's unstoppable, and every day is a great day! Let's go tract! Let's go help that person! Let's do it!!!!

Well, all goes well for a while, until he hits the Gloom phase...
Missions are hard! You're tired, you're sick of no luck tracting, you just want your members to give you referrals. This isn't anything like it looked like in the videos! I don't wanna tract any more!!!

But then, eventually, you don't care how hard it is. You don't care how little luck you get, or how hot it is, or how cold it is, or the fact that it's been winter for about 6 months. You're back in the game, you've got a cool red hat (figuratively, of course), and you're ready to rock and roll again! Vileplume! Whatever that means!



Now, not all missionaries are like this, naturally. Some don't ever hit that middle part. They start out rock solid, and stay that way. I know of a few missionaries who fit this next idea:

Ah, yeah! Onix! What a stud! Just a rock solid guy! He's hard working, he's obedient, he loves everyone, and everyone loves him. He's an exemplary missionary, someone you want for a companion. His drive rubs off on you, and there's no where for him to go but up! But as amazing as he seems, we all change, and grow... But how could he improve?


Boom!!! Steelix! No longer just a rock solid missionary, now he's STEEL solid! There's no way he'll be movable! He knows who he is, why he's here, and what he needs to do, and he's gonna do it, no questions asked!

But not every missionary comes out feeling strong and confident. Sometimes, they're scared, and unsure, and don't know what to do. They seem like a Magikarp, just this little fish who seems to have no power. "What do I do? How do I find more people? I don't wanna tract, I don't know these people!" Missions can be scary, and some people may not be quite ready for it... but...

At some point, they find themselves. It all clicks, and they explode! Suddenly, they're superstars! The world is their oyster, and they're gonna go baptize EVERYONE! They grown into their own, and have become large and menacing, like Gyarados! What may have started out slow has quickly progressed, and now we've got ourselves one heck of a missionary!






So, that pretty much sums up Elders. And what about Sisters, you ask? Well, for that we've got...

Togepi! Just as happy as can be! Bright, bubbly, friendly... Nothing could possibly be bad! Everything is great and perfect! Let's go baptize people! Well, eventually the turn into...

Togetic! Even happier! Even bubblier! And what's more, it can fly! Oh my gosh! Everything is so wonderful, the mission is great, all is grand! We're going to go spread our joy and love and energy to everyone, all over the world! Yay! Think it's going to stop? Oh goodness, no. They're just going to progress to...

Togekiss! What's gotta be the happiest, sweetest, brightest, sugariest Pokemon there is. The Sisters just get happier and happier, things just get better and better, you wonder how they don't just pop! They're attitudes are great, their smiles are fixed, and they could walk down the street in a thunderstorm, but their sunny dispositions would make a pathway of sunshine and happiness and keep them dry!

So, there ya have it: Missionaries are like Pokemon. We change, we grow, we adapt, we evolve. And we do it all without fighting! The mission is awesome!

Promotions and Relegations

Avoid that feeling!

What, another soccer blog? Yes! Talk about what you know, right?
In European sports, with a focus today on the English Premier League, they have a system of relegations and promotions. In the EPL, the bottom 3 teams will be relegated to the Football League Championship, and the top 2 teams of the Football League Championship automatically get promoted to the EPL, then the next 4 compete in a playoff, the winner promoting also. It's a good way of helping out those littler teams, offering them greater advancement, and giving them a spotlight that they wouldn't be able to get. They can increase their fan base, bring in more money, and stand a better chance of getting better players and continue to improve. However, it's also kind of a slap in the face to those EPL teams who are suddenly bumped into a lower league. It really keeps you focused. Obviously no one wants to finish bottom of the table, but when the threat is leaving the league you're in and bumping down to Football League Championship, it makes it that much more meaningful (I mean, seriously, how many of you have even heard of Football League Championship?). It's got to be pretty exciting for those teams to know that they were good enough to get a shot at Premier League glory! They worked hard, and got a promotion! The possibilities are endless now: FA Cup, Carling Cup, the League, Champions League! As long as they keep their drive, work really hard, and get enough money to get the good players, all these things are possible.
We all have that chance to be promoted or relegated. We can make the right decisions, and work hard, and get to the point where we're better than we were before. We can grow and become more successful. However, once we get there, we can't just stop. We have to continue to work hard. Often you see teams getting promoted to the EPL, then the very next season get relegated back down. You can't let that happen. Once you get promoted, work hard. Do everything you can. Don't fall back into that lower level. As we progress through life, and do what we should, we'll continue to grow and become stronger. We'll have the ability to overcome trials and temptations and continue to improve. We need to be wary not to fall into the trap of complacency, because we then run the risk and losing our footing and falling. Work hard, get promoted, keep working hard, stay in the Premier League, work harder, win the League. Notice a theme there?

Heroes in a Half Shell

Remember the show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Or the movies? Or games? Or toys? Of course you do, it was huge! You couldn't go anywhere in the '90s without seeing a backpack or t-shirt or something with those lovable turtles on them. TMNT was definitely one of my favorite shows growing up. Awesome movies, too. It was always the same: Raphael would lead the team, but something wouldn't work out well, which would upset Leonardo, being the hot head that he is, and he would strike out on his own. Eventually, through the efforts of  Donatello, the more intelligent of the group, the problems would be resolved, and the team would once again work together and accomplish their goal. All of this would of course go on while Michelangelo road skateboards, ate pizza, and said things like "radical!" or "cowabunga!"
The group, as we all know, started off as just ordinary turtles, before wandering into some radioactive ooze in the sewers (naturally). This radioactive ooze then cause them to mutate into giant, humanoid turtles that could walk on two legs, talk, crack jokes, and apparently even had opposable thumbs allowing them to hold weapons (though only 2 other fingers). After this, they were adopted by Splinter, a wise, sage-like rat who had also become overly sized due to the radioactive ooze. He was a martial arts expert, learning his art from his original owner, Hamato Yoshi, by mimicking his moves while he practiced (again, naturally). Splinter, now capable of speech and being quite hyper intelligent (especially for a rat), taught the turtles all he knew about martial arts. They became very proficient, and lived in the coolest bachelor pad you could want, made even cooler by the fact that it was all located in the sewers of New York City. The logical next step would be to become vigilante super heroes. Of course. This they did, and defended the people of New York from the evil villainy of Shredder and his soldiers, the Foot Clan.
As we start out our life, we are just small children. We can't walk, talk, or even feed ourselves. We're helpless little baby turtles. But, as we grow, we learn new things, we progress in our life. Eventually, there comes a time when we all need to make some very profound decisions, and grow up. We all must choose to find out if the Gospel is true (whether you'd been raised in it or not). We must all step into that radioactive ooze. When we do so, we grow. We become (in a very metaphorical sense) giant, walking, talking, fighting, skateboarding, pizza eating, crime stopping turtle ninjas. We become better; we have a focus and drive; we have determination; we know who we are, where we came from, why we're here, what we're doing, and where we're going. All we have to do is step into that ooze (it's really a lot better than it sounds).

Note: Shredder, Splinter and the turtles' archenemy, is just a regular guy, albeit a martial arts expert, donning some sweet armor. No radioactive ooze in his origin!
